Excerpt from Commentaries on the History and Cure of Diseases Was born in London in the year 1710, and received the early part of his education in that city. At the close of the year 1724 he was sent to Saint John's College in Cambridge, and six years after was elected a Fellow. From that time he directed his attention to the study of medicine, which he pursued partly at Cambridge and partly in London. Having taken his degree of Doctor of Physic he practised in the University for about ten years, and during that time read every year a course of lectures on the Materia Medica. In the year 1746 he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, and two years afterwards, leaving Cambridge, he settled in London and was elected into the Royal Society.
